What Does a Boiler Service Involve?

If you have gas central heating then there will come a time when you need a boiler service - and if you’ve never had one before you may be a little apprehensive about it. You needn’t be because it’s a pretty straightforward affair. Here at Hometech we carry out boiler servicing frequently and we find that as much as customer’s are anxious about what’s coming, they usually feel much more comfortable once we’ve explained the process and what’s involved. So, that’s the reason for this week’s post, a short guide on what to expect from a boiler service.

Visual Inspection

The first thing we’ll do is an overall visual inspection that takes in the whole of your boiler. It’s a good opportunity to adjust and clean and check for signs of distress and any damage that can be clearly seen. We would usually follow that up with some testing of your controls and any safety devices to ascertain whether they’re still working as they should. Flue and combustion is next with a look at several elements of these functions, such as construction, the route and termination of your flue, so there’s nothing blocking it.

Deeper Inspection

A trained engineer will clean and inspect the main parts and this will make sure they’re still fit for use with no defects that might impact on the boiler’s efficient operation. These components usually consist of the flue, ignition pins, heat exchange and the main burner.

Testing & Checks

As you can imagine, a boiler is a complex beast and it’ll require some testing and checks of several different parts. Without giving you an exhaustive list we will say that they consist of some of the most recognisable items you’d find in a boiler, such as the pilot burner, thermostat, electrical wiring and heating controls.

Keeping Record

There's a record taken and you’ll be able to keep a copy of all checks and inspection as part of an overall report. You can keep a copy of this whether you’re a tenant or a homeowner, with one copy going to your landlord if you rent.

Once the engineer has established that your boiler is fit for purpose you’re good to go and you can use your boiler the same as before. The report you keep is an official record of your annual inspection that you can keep as proof of your engineer’s boiler inspection.
