When Should You Replace Your Boiler?

There are various reasons why you should replace a boiler, the most important ones being a threat to safety and wellbeing of the occupants. Here, we’ll be going through some of the most common boiler issues that may mean you need to consider replacing your current one.

Smells.

If your boiler is starting to give off a bad smell then it could mean there’s a carbon monoxide leak. The leak may be causing the boiler to not burn as it should. If it’s an old type of boiler, and has the recognisable  blue flame which has now turned yellow, then it’s high time to call in a gas engineer. Even if you have a more modern boiler such as a combi, a smell can still be present, and it’s a sign you need to act. Having a carbon monoxide alarm can help you to identify problems of this nature sooner, so think about having one of these installed.

No heat.

Have you noticed your radiators are taking ages to heat up, sometimes not at all? Or are they quite tepid when they do come on? Most modern boilers will come on quickly and reach the right temperature almost instantly, but if your heating system has some sludge trapped in it then this can cause a blockage in your radiators. You may be asking what, if anything, has this to do with your boiler? Well, if it goes on for a long time it can result in damaging your boiler irreparably. So do something about it now.

Has your boiler been leaking?

If so, then this could lead to rust and corrosion, as well as bigger more structural problems to your home. This is what you would get with any kind of water leakage, especially if it’s been long-term. When there’s a leak you could be getting higher utility bills (water and heat) as a result, so it's worth looking into and potentially investing in a new boiler.

Strange noises.

If your boiler has been making some strange noises for a while now, then it might be high time to invest in a new one. Broken valves and pumps can often be the reason, but apart from the usual hum of your boiler heating up, you shouldn’t be hearing these sounds every time your boiler kicks into use. If it’s happening more and more often, then it might be time to look at purchasing a new one.
