All You Need to Know About Air Source Heat Pumps

In this post we come to you with everything you need to know about air source heat pumps. If you’re currently looking for alternative ways to keep your home warm and you’re investigating the various ways you could do that, then this post should be especially helpful. Searching for new ways of heating usually come from ideas about saving on energy and bills. And it’s perfectly normal to explore alternative heat sources in this way, and you may find that air source pumps aren’t for you, or that you’re excited at the prospect of them! Why not find out more by reading our simple guide.

Insulation and Electricity

Air source pumps are great if you’re thinking of using them to replace electric, coal or gas. You're home will need to be extremely well insulated for it to work. Air source heat pumps are usually outdoors and heat is taken from the air taking it to a much higher temperature with a heat pump. You’ll need a good source of electricity for it to work efficiently, but it won’t use as much electrical energy as you’d think.

Different Types of Air Pump

One uses heat and one uses air, so it’s air to water and air to heat. They use compressors, evaporators and condensers, and whichever method you use, the heat pumps will either convert air into a liquid or or take the heat from outside and put it through your central heating system (wet).

Renewable Heat Incentive

You’ll also be pleased to know that they qualify for RHI which stands for Renewable Heat Incentive. This means you’d get money towards heating costs which is always welcome in winter. New properties are better suited to air to water and air to heat is best with older builds. You’ll find though that with these types of pumps, they can’t produce hot water. Both pumps are energy efficient - and help to lower your carbon footprint.

CO2 Emissions

You’ll also need to keep in mind that you’ll need electricity to power it so there will be that cost to consider too, and there will be some CO2 emissions with this method. There is a higher cost as well if you’re replacing your electric heating system rather than a natural gas one.
